My research includes paintings, drawings and fabric constructions that attempt to re-describe my environment in ways which draw from shifting memory, personal history and connections. I am particularly interested in the collision of proscribed traditional social function and personal choice. As a native of the South, I have long since struggled with the expectation of social elegance, tradition and polish that define the Southern archetype. An aspect of my work that is often present is an element of failure – an attempt to achieve a level of perfection that is ultimately brought down by the system or structure creating it. I am not attracted to the elegance of perfection, but rather the beauty of the struggle.
